vegan diets



I am a teen and the only on in the family who does not eat meat and dairy. My family and I travel almost all the time and I don’t know how to eat vegan at restaurants. All my parents fav restaurants have no vegan friendly options, so I am sometimes forced into eating dairy.
Does anyone have any suggestions that I can do when we go out to eat? I would like to be a complete vegan but sometimes it appears impossible.

    the only way to be 100% sure is to bring your own food from home, or wait and eat at home. Since you travel you may just have to pick up vegan food at w/e grocery store you can find. I know it sucks, but its really hard to be vegan. I’m not one but I applaud your efforts since I know that being vegetarian is tough I can not imagine how hard it is to be vegan.

    Most restaurants will put something vegan together for you if you tell them you have special dietary needs. The server can ask the chef what he could make for you.

    Or you could just order a baked potato or sweet potato, rice, pasta, plain vegetables, or salad. Oil and vinegar on the side. French fries are vegan if they’re cooked in vegetable oil (ask). I know that’s not very exciting, but there should be plenty you could order to put together a meal. Look at the appetizer and salad menu. Sometimes soups are vegan even if it doesn’t say so. Keep soy granola bars in the car, and get in your protein when you can otherwise.

    At an Italian restaurant, have pasta primevera, no sauce no butter, with a salad on the side. Lots of indian restaurants have vegan meals. For mexican, ask for plain beans with no beef fat, plain tortillas, and salsa. When you read the menu, look for dishes that you can ask for without butter or cheese, if the rest of the dish looks ok.

    Maybe you and your family can plan ahead to dine at certain restaurants that DO offer vegan options right off the menu. And choose restaurants with big salad bars and create your own meal when possible. Many big chain restaurants have salad bars.

    The most important thing about being vegan and dining out is learning how to ask for what you want, and to feel confident asking, so this could turn into a good learning experience for you.

    Don’t be afraid to send something back that looks like it has butter or cheese on it, or isn’t exactly what you ordered. I have a vegan friend who lies and says she is allergic to dairy, just to be certain they’ll be extra careful!

    I know how you feel! It is a tough change — I just recently changed over from a vegetarian to vegan 3 months ago. The dairy products (like cheese) were the hardest to get around when we were eating out. My family eats out a lot.

    I learned quite a bit in these last few months, though! When you’re eating out, try these foods:

    Pizza without cheese, Chinese moo shu vegetables, Indian curries and dahl, eggplant dishes without the cheese, bean tacos without the lard and cheese (at Taco Bell :P ), Middle Eastern hummus and tabouli, Ethiopian injera (flat bread) and lentil stew, Thai vegetable curries.

    A lot of Indian foods are delicious and completely vegan!

    1. ask the restaurant you go to if they have vegan options, or if anything can be made vegan.
    2. if they don’t have anything vegan, then get a few sides without sauces or butters (baked potato with guacamole, steamed vegetables, brown rice). it won’t be the tastiest meal, but it’s okay.
    3. look at this website for options at chain restaraunts:

    4. ask to go to ethnic restaurants sometimes, say you think the family should try something different. most Asian and Indian restaurants have a good amount of vegan options (don’t get Naan though, it usually has milk)
    5. depending on how many people there are in your family, suggest you get that fraction of the restaurant choices and chose vegan or vegetarian restaurants
    6. bring snacks with you so you’re less tempted, things like crackers, energy bars, nuts, dried fruit.

    That’s awesome! Kudos to you! We sound much alike however I still eat dairy.

    Almost every restaurant has wholesome carrots. You might want to pack a cooler full of them too, for any unseen emergencies.
