I have given this a great deal of thought and i really want to be vegan (i don’t like the thought of an animal in my stomach). Also, would i loose weight? Do you have any snack ideas? I don’t like chips or anything fattning like that. I eat a lot of fruit, what else could i have?
I’m not fat or anything, I weight 127 and am 5′7 and i DO exercise.

Hmm… to become vegan is hard. Go for vegetarian first. But, don’t do it if you just want to lose weight. If your like me, you don’t lose weight. I have taken to pasta. Just eat the right stuff and eat enough iron. Meat subs are great. Tofu can be made to taste nice. Cheese has meat in it. Most packaged food does. To be a vegan. I would die. No chocolate! No milk. No anything. I wear leather shoes and all. Vegan is much harder.
Some people at my school tried to go vegetarian, but after a few years they had to stop. They got sick. Lacking in iron is a big problem. Hurts your body. Go to your doctor and talk to him/ her about going vegetarian.

DO IT!!!
You will feel better about yourself because you are not part of the cruelty machine.
I eat lots of fruit for snacks, and vegan chocolate and when I’m at university I can get vegan cakes and muffins from the organic food co-op. There IS a wide array of foods you can eat, but there are little quirks which differ between countries regarding labelling laws etc so the best thing to do is hook up with vegans in your town and get them to show you what is ok and what isn’t.
Yahoo groups used to be divided into regions, now i think it is not. But if you look for a vegan social group in your local area or maybe an animal rights group you can meet some new people and they will show you the ropes like which restaurants are vegan friendly etc.
Go for it, you’ll never regret it!!!

First off, it may better for some people to gradually cut out non-vegan foods from their diets since it is a drastic change however….
I went straight to a vegan from a meat eater in one day so it can be done.
There are a TON of vegan foods out there its not all beans and carrots, contrary to what a lot of my friends think
I would suggest searching the web for starter sites like goveg.com, veganoutreach.org, and many others.
Here are some foods I eat/buy (p.s. I’m a broke college student so this is all on a pretty tight budget)
Lots of soy milk: lite van and choco from Silk- its awesome
Kashi brand cereals, cheerios
Vegan frozen waffles
Oatmeal
Sugar (Florida Crystals is vegan)
Silk cream for my coffee
Potatoes, carrots, salad mixes, canned and frozen vegs, beets, yams, onions, green and bell peppers, tomatoes
Whole wheat flour and other baking goods (I bake A LOT)
Rices- wild, brown, and ethnic
Whole pastas (made w/o eggs)
Beans! Kidney, navy, split, garbanzo, black eye (canned or fresh)
Apples, bananas, melon, cantaloupe, fresh pineapple, oranges, blueberries
Vegan sour cream (tofutti)
Vegan soy burgers
(There are a lot of vegan imitation foods like butter, cheese, mayo, ‘meats’, ice cream, and such)
And a lot more I can’t think of
I also suggest you go to your local library and check out a couple of vegan cookbooks. They often explain what is important in a good vegan diet like calcium, protein, and B12. They will give you grocery lists and real easy recipes (I just made Mediterranean stuffed peppers last night, they were amazing! From “Vegan cooking for one or two”)
And remember to always read labels! Both for anti-vegan ingredients and for nutrition! Being a vegan is all about being healthy, just because your not eating meats doesn’t mean you can indulge on the sweets, fats or too much salt. Be a healthy vegan not a junk food vegan (they do exist!)
Hope that helped and welcome to a healthier, friendlier, and more planet- conscious lifestyle.

Just to correct a few misconceptions: i’ve been vegan for about 8 years. I’ve not gone back to eating meat or dairy at any point, i’ve not gotten seriously ill, i don’t have iron deficiency, and i’ve never had B vitamin shots!
I can understand that people can get worried and make sweeping overgeneralizations about the vegan way of eating. But that usually comes from not being fully educated about how to go about it properly. After all, you can be sick on any diet if you’re not well informed.
I’d get some good books – e.g. Becoming Vegan, and the Vegan Sourcebook. Note that being vegan is not just a diet: it’s a way of living. Oh, and you don’t have to snack on just potato chips!

Depending on how much current fat you have right now, you might drop a few pounds.
If you don’t like eating fattening snacks, you can have a sandwich (whole wheat, lettuce, onion, tomato -or whatever you like- topped off with your favourite dressing, -or no dressing-). Almonds are a great nutritious snack. Depending on your mood, a peanut butter bagel slice, can be the tastiest food on earth.
If you do go vegan and at some point, crave something more “fattening”, there are a lot of substitutions available. (Soy ice cream, etc.)

I don’t consider myself ‘vegan’ – while I do eat in such a way that many would suggest such about myself – I don’t and won’t. I don’t like titles – and feel that they hinder more than free a person. Not to mention that many like to use their version of what a word means – which very well may not be the same meaning that another has.
The first obvious – you wouldn’t be eating meat……
Cholesterol would more than likely drop – if your eating a well balanced diet and not alot of the junk food that you can still eat and be vegetarian/vegan.
Lose weight – more than likely because of the shock to the system and as it adjusts – you will be going to the bathroom more till you adjust. Call it a form of ‘withdrawal’ of sorts and one of the short term side effects that no matter what the change in diet, a person will go through.
Snacks – many. Fruit, veggies – all sorts of dips and things that you can buy/make to dip them in. I have a ‘thing’ for pumpkin seeds myself – easy to find and buy most anywhere. There are also nuts – not to forget the dried fruit. There are lots of crackers that are totally great and within the diet choice. Soy ice ‘cream’ (my personal favorite that I turned many onto that didn’t know about it).
I also am a ‘juicer’ – meaning that I like to juice veggies as a treat. My current favorite is carrots, cilantro, bell peppers, cucumber, with an apple thrown in for fun. I change it up depending upon what is in season.
I also have been playing with pizza – taking the toffu sour cream, thinning it down with some soy milk (not MUCH) into something like a white sauce with spices of my choice, and then putting veggies, fake meat maybe, or sometimes fruit (LOVE pineapple). Sort of like an ‘alfredo’ kind of thing going on that is unusual that I like.
The only limit – is your imagination – or your personal tastes.

Do not join the ranks of vegan terrorism, it can be bad for your health and your finances. It is just a trend, try getting a new hair cut or something. As for the weight, start hitting the gym and lay off the SNACKS!

if you go from meat eater to vegan, you can either die or you can get seriously sick, so start out as a vegetarian, and once you get used to being a vegetarian, you will be able to come a vegan yourself.
